Estonia is not how most people picture it. There are, obviously, influences from the Soviet era, but there is so very much more to this wonderful country, from the unmitigated beauty of the countryside to the endless sandy beaches (as well as all the man made delights in between), there is something for everyone to see, experience and enjoy. The capital city Tallinn is an obvious starting point, and the city encapsulates all that is modern Estonia, as well as having areas like Old Town showcasing the countless influences the country has had on it. The modern areas of the city offer a whole host of attractions, with opera, theatre, restaurants and bars all proving popular amongst the locals and visitors. Tallinn in particular is becoming more popular with stag and hen parties, and is developing a very good reputation for offering an affordable and enjoyable short break. For those who don’t wish to help themselves to too many generously-proportioned servings of vodka from the numerous bars there are a number of other attractions in the city – the oldest steeple in Northern Europe on the Town Hall, for example. Wonderful views from the still present city wall should be experienced if visiting the city, as well as visits to Toompea Castle, Kadriorg Park and the Open Air Museum. Elsewhere Estonia offers a number of other treats for tourists, from the towns of Prnu, Tartu and Narva to the national parks of Lahema, Soomaa and Vilandsi. There are also over 1500 islands to visit, each with their own individual styles – not least of which Saaremaa, home to few people and a simple, rural way of life. There is an indescribable amount of natural and man made beauty throughout Estonia, as well as nightlife and attractions to keep those seeking more adventurous pursuits happy. Prices may not be as cheap as in other Eastern European countries, but this just shows that Estonia has experienced massive success in its relatively short independence and is well worth a visit by anyone.
